Wow, thank you for putting this into words. I once heard my brother ask that same question, “why doesn’t she just leave,” when referring to a girl in a movie in a similar position. But like you said, it’s not their fault, women have often been painted as docile patient creatures but that label makes women feel like that’s how their worth is defined. Some people feel that sexism doesn’t exist in certain parts of the world and that we’re ahead of the sexism that impeded women for centuries, but how we’re talked to, as if we’re supposed to tolerate abuse is so detrimental in truly being equal.
I get it’s difficult for people to understand perspective based on limited information. In most cases, to outsiders it’s apparent, but there’s so many things in play for a person to continue suffering despite knowing better.
Hopefully these perspectives would make someone see things from a different lens and be kinder.
